A Letter from the Editors-in-Chief

Tatiana von Bothmer '23, Cathleen Chow '23, Myla van Lynde '23

A school newspaper reflects what is important to the student body and why it is important to them. El Batidor is no exception. El Bat provides a valuable space for students to share their stories and the information and research they pursue throughout the Cate community. Through student journalism, the student body uncovers underlying truths within the Cate community – the stories that exist somewhere in between classrooms, dorm meetings, and assemblies.

Our goal this year is to further establish El Bat as a credible, objective, and relevant news source for the Cate community through publishing pieces that provide an array of perspectives to tell an entire narrative. We are fortunate enough to have excellent writers from all grades, dorms, and backgrounds to tell their and others’ unique Cate experience. They have worked extremely hard to articulate stories and give our readers an overview of what is happening on the Mesa. Our articles range from what’s happening on campus – sunset ceremony, homecoming, and student government – to what’s happening off the Mesa – Avofest, outings week, and sports games – to what’s happening in the world around us– Roe v. Wade decision, the midterm elections, and the royal family.

In addition to these articles, we have notes from the “Kindness Jar,” a jar set up in the dining hall for any member of the community to leave notes of gratitude for an act of kindness. This tradition was set up by former Cate Student Body President and Vice President, Rachel Ma ‘22 and Ricky Valente ‘22, to highlight kind moments throughout the Mesa. While we also focus on publishing pieces that inform our students, we acknowledge the significance of kindness and thoughtfulness in the process. We know that these little moments are as important a story as any.

We want to thank everyone, including writers, editors, and our faculty advisors Ms. Shah and Ms. Calhoun, who have all devoted hours for the successful release of our fall edition of the El Batidor 2022-2023–the first of many wonderful editions to come.

Sincerely,

Cathleen Chow, Myla van Lynde, and Tatiana von Bothmer
