On Saturday, April 27th, Cate school’s senior celebrities were spotted strutting the red carpet at the Met Gala-themed Senior Prom! School Vice President Adrian Ordonez who was involved with planning the event along with school President Andy Carranza and parent volunteers said, “The class of ‘24 cleans up nice”.
The evening began with pictures at Sunset Bench, which lived up to its name on the beautiful 70 degrees and sunny day. Junior Stella Rogers described her Instagram feed as “flooded” with posts from the event.
While many things about the Cate experience are unconventional, the 2024 class senators, Alyna Takahashi, and Shannon Murray said their goal in planning was to make prom a “classic school dance”. Shannon said her vision was for it to be, “ like the ones I grew up watching on Disney Channel”.
After pictures, in what President Andy Caranza described as “classically Cate”, the seniors boarded yellow school buses and headed to Soho House in Santa Barbara for dinner and dancing.
At Soho House, they were greeted by a red carpet and the bartenders whipping up signature mocktails complete with light-up ice cubes, a touch that Ingrid Lu ‘24 said, “lit up my night, literally”, and the cocktail hour commenced, followed by a sit-down dinner. There was even a magician which senior Regina Flores said, “made my night.”
The restaurant then transformed into a dancefloor “like Cinderella’s pumpkin at midnight” according to Charlotte Wells ‘24 and DJ Flamez played “all the classics” said Claire Clark ‘24.
Oona Summerford-ng ‘24 advised the junior class, saying, “Next year bring a change of shoes because it is a challenge to cupid shuffle in heels.”
A highlight for Max DeVore ‘25 was the camera that projected the dance floor happenings onto a T.V. outside. “It was a little weird, but very entertaining” he admits.
DJ Flamez ended the night with “One More Time” which Claire Clark ‘24 said was “sad but fitting because it is hard to believe that we are leaving”.
This encompasses what many expressed about the bittersweet feelings at the event.
In keeping with the senator's wishes of a traditional prom experience, the night concluded with an after-party that went late into the night at the Yakimo Academy property in Summerland which Charlotte Wells ‘24 described as “unreal”.
There was “enough candy, chips, and soda to put the Blue Ewe out of business,” said Anna Morse, who described the activities of hot tubbing and karaoke as “a wholesome night”.
Ceci Todd said a highlight for her was class president and vice president Andy and Adrian's karaoke performance of City of Stars saying, “I loved it! They are my president and VP forever.” Other standout performances include Kyle’s solo on Gangnam Style, Christian Rhee, and Karla going bar for bar on Dark Horse.
“At first, I didn’t even want to go” revealed Angie Zoric ‘24 going on to say, “but by the end, I didn’t want to leave.”
Even Fernando Baldocchi’24 can admit that “prom was a magical night” continuing to say, “Thank you so much to all the parents who dedicated their time to making it possible.”
