On Friday, October 4th, the student body gathered under the misty Mesa night sky for the club fair, an event designed to showcase all the clubs available to students at Cate. Students walked around Kirby Quad, eagerly visiting each table to hear more about the numerous choices that Cate offers.
The preparation for the event began a week before when club heads began to create colorful and attractive posters for their tables. Students started to trickle over to Kirby after sports on the day of the event, and by 6:30, the fair was in full swing. Students signed up for multiple clubs that were intriguing to them while socializing and enjoying delicious snacks. Club coordinator Elias Lieser ‘25 remarks on the successes of the club program, “Compared to previous years, there’s been a massive increase in just the people who have signed up for clubs.”
While the club fair highlighted many of Cate’s famous and returning clubs, the event also introduced some new clubs to the student body. Devon Liang ‘27, gives an overview of his new club, “‘Beyond the Game’ is a club where we come together to focus on how your diet, mental health, sleep, and stretching habits come together and further enhance your performance as an athlete.” For those interested in diving deeper into the technicalities of athletic performance, make sure to check out Beyond the Game Club. Kimy Zhang ‘27 founded Guhzeng Club, inspired by the Chinese string instrument. Kimy says, “Guhzeng Club is a club that helps people better understand foreign instruments. Musicians will be coming to perform instruments like Guhzeng, Dizi, and Erhu.” Triathlon Club, Mafia Club, Girls Rock Band, and Baking at Cate are more additions to the program.
When prompted with the question, “What clubs do you recommend freshmen or any new students to join?” Lieser replies, “For new freshmen, I would say to try to find an affinity club if possible. We have every affinity club you could want.” Cate has a variety of affinity groups that each foster a unique sense of belonging and equality within their members. Examples of these groups range from Jewish Student Union to Hispanic/Latinx Association. Affinity clubs are a safe space for students seeking a way to relate to others, feel a sense of belonging, and engage in unifying activities.
As the school year progresses and the workload increases, students will long for a place to escape the demands and rigors of academic life at Cate. Cate offers a variety of clubs that offer a space to stimulate creativity and engage in rigorous conversations. Or, if you just want a place to socialize and eat delicious snacks, there are clubs that cater to those desires as well. So whether you’re passionate about yoga, rock climbing, reading, or STEM, Cate has a club for every possible interest.
