Cate’s Road Runners

Sanai Edwards '25

“Run, Forest, Run!” This infamous quote screamed out to Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump doesn’t even begin to describe the speed at which the Cate Track Athletes run. The team is one of the largest on campus, and they have had an amazing season filled with new personal and school records.

Track star and school record holder Kennedy Kirkland ‘23 has been one of the most consistent and indispensable runners on the team. From long jumping to sprinting, there is much power that comes from this quiet storm. This power was exemplified most recently in the CIF SS- Division 4 Prelims track meet at Carpinteria High School. Here, Kennedy managed to set a new personal best in the long jump with a leap of 17ft 10.75. She, along with Sanai Edwards ‘25, Tamsyn Taptitch ‘23, and Francesca Sutch ‘25, placed 12th overall in the girls’ 4x100 relay and were .6 seconds away from breaking the school record set in 1993.

The boy's team had an outstanding amount of broken records. The first was the men’s 4x400 relay run by Pen Brooks ‘24, Justin Musyimi ‘23, Sebastian Sutch ‘24, and Tyler Martinez ‘24, setting a new record of 3.28.88. Not many people can run a mile in 4:19, but distance runner Sebastian did, breaking the 1600-meter record. Just a few meets before, he had also broken the 800 meter school record. Kennedy reminds runners before every race to “stay in [their] own lane, both metaphorically and physically.” As much as track, like any sport, requires physical exertion, the mental strength of athletes is regularly tested at meets. By focusing on their own lanes, athletes maintain attention on their skills and beat their own time rather than comparing themselves to other runners.

Stay tuned to see how students Sebastian and Everest Schipper ‘24 do in CIF semi-finals. Although not many people know of the great feats accomplished by the Cate track team, they have put in the time, sweat, and tears to make sure this season was a good one.
