Clubs at Cate

With over 70 clubs on campus, it’s hard to keep track of them all. Like, what’s the difference between Finance Club and Investment Club? Perhaps we’ll never know… but you can learn more about Taylor Swift Fan Club, Chair Club, and Philosophy Club below!

Taylor Swift Fan Club — Eswyn Gray ‘23, Nicole Teh ‘23, Myla van Lynde ‘23, Riley Pan ‘24

Favorite Midnights Song: “You’re On Your Own, Kid”

The Taylor Swift Fan Club (TSFC) made a big splash with their first meeting: a celebration of the release of Taylor’s new album, Midnights. With two life-sized cardboard Taylor Swift cutouts, an array of snacks, and a cake with a mini Taylor on it, it's safe to say that TSFC went all out for this new album. Pars Patio was packed on the night of October 20th, with Frank Griffin, the club’s advisor, and Ms. Caylor commanding silence over the eager fans, who had promised to abide by the rules of study conditions. This promise was inevitably broken as the clock struck midnight in New York, and 9:00 on the Cate campus. Tears were shed, hearts were broken, and Taylor Swift was stolen in the chaos. When asked about the theft of Taylor, club head Nicole Teh responded that it showed a “lack of respect” and that she was “stolen for attention.” However, at the end of the night, she was returned, and the listening party was deemed a success.

Chair Club — Ada James ‘23, Harry McAdam ‘23

Favorite Chair: The wooden chair in the Art Loft with green upholstery

Chair Club was busy over the summer holding a competition in which Cate students were invited to send in a photo of a chair to compete for a Pierre Paulin mug. The winners were Francesca Sutch ‘25, Talia Tom ‘23, and Sophie Alijani ‘24. Alas, the club itself has yet to meet this year, but you can always keep up with the latest chair finds on the club’s Instagram, @cat_echairs, which features a variety of seats such as bright green metro chairs, the booths of the 777 Pacific Surfliner, piano benches, and more. Though perhaps a more niche club, the specificity of Chair Club is in fact its strength, having amassed a rather large fan base. One such fan was overheard saying, “once chair club meets, the year will be complete.” The community eagerly awaits the first meeting, but for now, will continue to enjoy the carefully curated Instagram posts.

Philosophy Club — Frances Davis ‘24, Clyde Kye ‘24, Seb Sutch ‘24

Favorite Philosophical Theory: Absurdism

Philosophy Club’s first meeting was a big hit, with so many people in attendance that chairs had to be shared. For some, the proposed question of what is worth dying for and the idea of free will brought on an existential crisis. Free will was defined as the ability to make a decision that is wholly your own. Several argued that they have free will to do whatever they want, such as switch chairs with their neighbor for no apparent reason, while others argued that even that decision would still be influenced by outside factors. After Brooks Hansen pushed the question even further by introducing the question of reality and self-existence, many were left confused, but with a whole new perspective. In the words of Clyde Kye ‘24, “We were enlightened.”
