Cross Country: A Blazing Start

Everest Schipper '24

The cross country season is off to a blazing start. Last year, after over 20 years, cross country head coach Karl Weis retired leaving behind the Cate harriers, which left much of the team in distress over what this season was going to look like. After much deliberation and searching for a new coach to fill Weis’ shoes, the boys team found Tim Weir. His cross country prowess and knowledge of the sport has shaped this year's boys team. Alongside Weir, Hannah Solis-Cohen, who aided Weis in last year’s season, took over coaching the girls team. Additionally, Alicia Hammond is providing her expertise, assisting both teams for a successful season. The opening race was the TCAA Meet 1 at El Camino Real Park in Ventura. At the meet there were seven teams represented, all running the 3-mile course. The course was relatively flat looping around the tree lined and shade covered park allowing for reprieve from the hot temperatures.

On the boy's side, junior Seb Sutch finished first for Cate with a time of 16:27. He was followed by junior Everest Schipper running a 17:52. Close behind, senior captain Harry McAdam ran an 18:08. Junior George Gordon ran his first ever cross country race in an impressive time of 18:47. Rounding out the top seven, junior Christian Gonzalez, sophomore Lucas Huiner, and junior Oliver Lee ran 18:58, 19:00, and 19:00.03. The boy's team finished third and is hoping to beat second-place Thacher next meet.

On the girl's side, senior Captain Kendall Thorne finished second overall with a time of 20:56. Close behind, sophomore Francesca Sutch ran a 21:03 alongside freshman Jenevive Won also running a 21:03. Senior captain Lylie Bechtel finished fifth running a 21:12. Only letting one person break up the pack, senior captain Emily Allison finished seventh with a 21:27. Shortly after Madeleine Patrick crossed the line with a time of 21:33. Completing the top seven, junior Caroline Keohane ran a 21:41. The girls won the meet scoring 21 points beating their next closest competitor by 24 points.
