New Faces at Cate (Kate McCoy '25)

Interviewed: Emma Henderson, Clair Dahm, Michael Szanyi

In the constantly evolving landscape of Cate, a wave of fresh perspectives are making themselves known throughout the campus. Through gearing up for a new academic year and the closing of the first trimester, it's not just the changing leaves that signal a shift; there's a nearly tangible sense of excitement surrounding the arrival of the new teachers' faces. These accomplished individuals bring a myriad of knowledge, diverse experiences, and a passion for education that promises to embrace and foster the intelligence that surrounds Cate’s campus. In taking a closer look at the new teachers around Cate, they can only be described as teachers who are experienced and in a perfect position to leave a memorable mark and lasting effect on ‘the spirit of this place’.

Prior to their arrival at Cate, each one of these educated individuals had previous experience with being a leader in an educational setting, and discovered their love for being in the classroom. Whether it was from teaching students or coaching sports, hopefully the new faces, Emma Henderson, Clair Dahm, and Michael Szanyi have begun to feel welcome at this place we so gratefully call home. When asked about their backgrounds and teaching experiences thus far, each provided a thoughtful response illuminating who they were, why they were drawn to Cate, and the ups and downs that came with the transition.

Emma Henderson jumped head first into this community. Nearing the end of the first trimester, Ms. Henderson has been able to balance teaching mathematics, and coaching the early season of Girls JV Soccer. When asked why she wanted to be a teacher, she provided a response that demonstrates the change that can happen over the course of time in your mind and in your life. Ms. Henderson said that she was “initially opposed to becoming a classroom teacher” because of how much she was frustrated at times in her own education. After working at summer camps, however, Ms. Henderson saw a way that she could be involved in creating a different and more engaging classroom experience. Although she loved her previous school, she was looking for somewhere that would help her grow as a teacher. Cate was the place! With a tight-knit and caring community where students are valued as whole people, a progressive educational philosophy, and a strong outdoors program, Ms. Henderson had to look no further. When faced with the question of rewards and challenges, she said, “I love being a part of the moment when students surprise themselves in their own learning and do things that they originally thought were outside of their ability”. She also recognized the other side. As she referred to challenges, she said, “There's always challenges -- it feels like the to-do list is never ending sometimes, but the benefits outweigh the tribulations.” So far, Ms. Henderson’s hard work and dedication to her students and athletes in this new place provide a stellar foundation for her to continue developing math students and soccer players alike.

While Ms. Henderson has already been welcomed into the community gracefully, and is appreciated inside and outside the classroom - on and off the field, she is not Cate's only new face.

Clair Dahm, Cate’s new U.S. History teacher is originally from Australia. She made her way to the sunny west coast of Santa Barbara all the way from Andover School in Massachusetts. The change in location was a big decision, so when prompted to answer why Dr. Dahm chose Cate, she said, “It felt familiar. Not just because there's Australian flora, but also because people here seem to really know and enjoy each other”. Obviously, with such a move, there are also challenges. Dr. Dahm found most of her challenges are actually what are keeping her engaged and productive. The biggest lesson she learned, however, was found in the classroom. She stated, it “is to not hold on too rigidly to a specific lesson plan or take-away--to embrace the tangents and follow the avenues where students seem to be the most invigorated”. Wise words! As one of Dr. Dahms' U.S. History students, I can say that all of the lessons and classes I’ve had so far this year are nothing short of engaging and fun. I always look forward to the class because it truly is ‘student led’, which is an aspect of the classroom that Cate prides itself on.

While I know everyone on campus appreciates the bright and smiling faces of Dr. Dahm and Ms. Henderson, I also can confidently say that everyone appreciates Michael Szanyis ever-smiling face and his unassailable fashion sense. Mr. Szanyi began his education as a dance teacher, and then found his way to the classroom, in style, of course. In looking at Cate, Mr. Szanyi was “drawn to Cate because of its philosophy of inquiry, its richness of student experiences, and of course, its location!” Mr. Szanyi was also looking for a new opportunity in growth and community. Although he is new, Mr Szanyi has already made such an impact on the students that he teaches. Marco Gomez ‘25, says “So far I have loved being in Mr. Szanyi’s English Class. His lessons are so full of life and they always find a way to keep me engaged. His dance teacher experience is reflected in his classroom teaching - his teaching style seems to have a constant flow that was perfected through his journey - from dance to books, from studio to classroom.” High praise! When inquired about the challenges faced through the transition, Mr. Szanyi recognized that he felt grading was a scam. I can't think of a single student who wouldn't agree.

Reflecting on the challenges faced by these educators during their transitions, it's clear that their passion for teaching transcends obstacles. From the seemingly never-ending to-do lists to the revelation that grading might just be a scam, they navigate these hurdles with resilience humor, and, of course, good style.

In embracing these new faces, Cate welcomes not only accomplished educators but also individuals who embody the ‘spirit of this place’ and are dynamic, passionate, and dedicated to fostering the development of Cate’s students. Looking forward, the collective spirit of growth and learning will surely thrive with the addition of these remarkable teachers, and they will no doubt leave an enduring impact on the fabric of Cate.
